Adopted June 14, 1777 (later to become Flag Day), Continental Congress resolved "that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation." Since Congress didn't specify dimensions, proportions or size of the field or canton, an arrangement for the stars or even the shape of the flag, there were many variations in American flags until 1912.
